This was a different read for me. It is still Science Fiction/ Fantasy and the narrator is a teenager however the book itself is less emotion driven and does not have the same young adult feel. Maybe everyone else still thinks it is 100 percent young adult, I personally think it is more on the brink. Either way I loved it. The characters had great dynamic and the premise is so so so interesting. I gave it 4/5 stars on Goodreads only because sometimes I don’t feel like reading extensive details that I thought weren’t important (although they probably were….)

“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.

But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.

Magic. I have to say I do not read many books on witches and wizards (or maybe I am just having a mind blank). Of course I have read Harry Potter but besides that I can’t say I have read a book as wizardly magic oriented as Uprooted. This book starts out light as Agnieszka is forced to go live with the Dragon. Her and the Dragon are absolutely hilarious together as he is very clean and she is a walking disaster waiting to happen. As the book continues the Wood comes more into play and consequently more magic comes into play. And, the Wood is amazing. There is so much history that the reader doesn’t get to know until the last 75 pages and it all broke little pieces of my heart. Also the Wood leads to some pretty epic confrontations all featuring the use of spells and my brain loves creating mental images of these battlegrounds, ah so perfect.

Go and get this book, please, if you at all want to read a great Science Fiction/ Fantasy that is not romance based. That is really all I have to say! Just go read it!
